Lochocki et al. report detection of amyloid plaques by label-free fluorescence and Raman imaging in snap-frozen frontal cortex tissue from Alzheimer’s disease cases. They identify presence of carotenoid in a cored amyloid plaque area, versus a non-plaque area, suggesting a distinct neuroinflammatory response to misfolded protein aggregations.
