PERFORMANCE APPRAISALS AS A HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGEMENT FUNCTION AND ITS’ PROBLEMS IN TOURISM ESTABLISHMENTS: A CONCEPTUAL EVALUATION
Abstract
This study was conducted to investigate the performance appraisal errors, prevention of these errors and the role of the human resource units in the identification and prevention of errors in the performance appraisal activities in tourism enterprises where service quality and customer satisfaction are directly related to employee performance. Performance appraisal is one of the most important human resource functions for service enterprises, in which the labor is the predictive factor in production. Performance appraisal is a process that provides various benefits for employees, managers, and the business. It is crucial to plan, execute, finalize and evaluate the results without error in this process, which has a direct impact on the efficiency of the business. Despite this importance of performance evaluation, the debate continues over the accuracy of the performance appraisal processes and results. Considering the importance of employee performance on service performance, in the study, the resources that can be reached to evaluate, the theoretical and practical studies about the performance appraisal and the information obtained within the existing applications have been scanned using the document review method. It is also aimed to determine the errors related to performance appraisals in tourism enterprises by combining the results obtained by the authors based on their individual experiences and observations in the tourism sector. At the end of the study, the role of the human resources department in resolving the identified problems was discussed and solution suggestions were given.
