INDUCED FEMALE EFFECT ON THE BREEDING SEASON ADVANCING OF THE SAANEN GOAT IN NORTHERN ALGERIA
Abstract
In order to benefit the season of grass availability to increase the duration of lactation, we tried to advance the sexual activity season in the Saanen goat. Our experiment was conducted in a private farm located in the province of Tizi-Ouzou during late June and early July 2013. We have employed a herd of 30 dairy Saanen breed goats, aged 2 to 4 years and having a body weight ranging from 20 to 48kg. In addition to these females, an adult buck of 45 kg of body weight, with an apron preventing mating is used just to heat detection. Six of the 30 goats were induced on heat before the breeding season by applying vaginal sponges impregnated with progesterone during 11 days, also the injection of 1ml of PGF2α and 400 IU of PMSG 48 hours before removing the vaginal sponges. These goats were in constant contact with rest of females. After the treatment end, the 6 goats (100%) were detected in estrus by the buck within 36 +/- 20.08 hours on average. During the 10 days following estrus of the induced goats, 16 of the 24 other females (66.6%) had expressed heats (detected by the buck). In conclusion we can say that there is opportunity to advance the sexual activity season in a Saanen goat herd in northern Algeria by inducing a small lot of female. Â
