Abstract This Critical Synthesis Package contains: (1) a Critical Analysis of the psychometric properties and application to health sciences education for the Modified Archer's Health Professions Motivation Survey (MAHPMS); and (2) a copy of the MAHPMS instrument and scoring key developed by Linda Perrot, MD, JD. The MAHPMS is a 68-item instrument aimed at assessing the motivation of health sciences students and practitioners. The survey measures goal-orientation, learning strategies, preference for easy or difficult tasks, and use of metacognitive/non-metacognitive strategies. Several studies suggest good reliability and validity in health education research (medicine, nursing, and pharmacy). The length of the survey and social desirability bias may present some challenges in which students might not answer the questions truthfully, particularly if given as a repeated measure. Although few published studies utilizing this instrument exist, the MAHPMS shows good promise in the health sciences, as well as potentially other areas of study such as dentistry, public health, physical therapy, psychology, and other professional level programs. Additional uses for this instrument may include using it to explore changes in a student's locus of control, use of learning strategies, and goal orientation brought about via interventions.
