This work aims at reflecting on the popular short story. Initially, its fundamental characteristics and its specificities as a genre, its classification, language and its elements will be presented. Then, after this general approach, the work will discuss the relations between the popular short story and the myth. In order to illustrate and reaffirm the importance and richness of the popular short story, as well as its faint borders with the myth, an Indian short story will be presented; it was chose among the 21 Indian-origin Brazilian popular short stories gathered by author Silvio Romero. A brief analysis of this short story will be made, having as main theoretical tool the theory proposed by Alan Dunces, North American, in its book The Morphology of North. American Indian folktales and others essays (1996).
