The aim of the paper is to identify the basic cinematography style elements of the Ukrainian fiction film directed by Mykhailo Illienko “Firecrosser” and the levels of its realization. Research methodology. The author uses the heritage of the European art criticism tradition, including the theory of formal school style and the national film research tradition. Results. The author concludes that the “Firecrosser” pictorialism and style development are characteristic of the national fine arts tradition and have baroque and romantic origins. In terms of metaphors of visual character and direct visual “references” to relevant historical eras, Oleksandr Kryshtalovych embodies a specific and sensual depiction of the reality, where the film characters are, by the cinematography means characteristic of the Ukrainian “poetic” school. The mental, emotional, semantic levels of the formation of the subject-pictorial space of the film correspond to the psychology of the Ukrainian national character. Novelty. The main features and levels of the visual style development have been identified in the art of the Ukrainian cameraman Oleksandr Kryshtalovych as exemplified in the fiction film “Firecrosser”. The practical significance. The material in this article can be used in training cinematography and television cameramen specializing in 021 “Audiovisual Arts and Production”.
