Abstract This resource is a standardized patient (SP) case for medical student education in pediatrics. Within a time frame of 15–20 minutes, the student is asked to interview a parent and child, taking a complete history that includes the parent's concerns. A physical exam is not performed but is presumed to have already occurred and be normal. An SP postencounter checklist and a student postencounter questionnaire are used to determine a pass/fail score for the student, as well as being available for faculty to use when providing formative feedback to the student. The case was developed in the 2005–2006 academic year and has since been used as a formative assessment in our pediatric clerkship with approximately 50 students per year, for a total of 300 students. Currently, it is a formative assessment with immediate feedback. All encounters have occurred in the same facility, and all SPs have been trained by the same trainers in the same simulation program. We plan, however, to develop a summative graded-objective standardized clinical exam using this case and several others in conjunction with the family medicine department. Feedback will still be given to the student, and we are currently deciding how best to deliver the feedback to future students.
