By examining the morphological, referential, structural and case status of Romanian al in coordination, the author claims that it is a semi-independent possessive pronoun, performing a syntactic function within the possessive/genitive syntagm. Depending on the case of the possessed object noun in the first syntagm, the coordination of al in the second syntagm may take place either at the level of possessed objects, the “normal” situation (prietenii mei și ai tăi ‘my friends and yours’) or at the level of possessors (dorințele prietenilor mei și ai tăi ‘the desires of my friends and yours’), which are at the same time possessed objects for the possessives they subordinate. As second term in coordination al has either a causative form (= proper case: N, ACC, G, D) or a pro-case form (Pro G, Pro D). At the referential level, the possessed object represented by al is non-identic or identic with the possessed object represented by the noun in the first syntagm.
