From the origins of Rome to the end of the Second Punic War, the Romans’ approach to peace is known only through the eyes of historians who wrote centuries after the events. Faced with significant documentary gaps, these authors reinterpreted the history of the Roman wars in a moralizing and / or patriotic way to meet the challenges of their time. The way of ending hostilities and making peace between the 8th and 3rd centuries was thus revised and corrected at the end of the Republican era. It is therefore necessary to elucidate the logic behind the rewriting of these narratives in order to understand how the Romans truly envisaged peace during the first centuries of their history.
