Aim: This study aimed to investigate the missed nursing care in an adult intensive care unit at a university hospital and the factors that influenced nursing care planning. Method: This study was designed as a descriptive cross-sectional study and was conducted with 78 nurses working in the adult intensive care unit of a university hospital. The study data were collected with a Personal Information Form and the Misscare Scale. The study data were analyzed with IBM SPSS 25.0, and the data were assessed with descriptive statistical methods (mean, standard deviation, frequency) and Mann-Whitney U and Kruskal Wallis test. Results: The study results suggested that the labor resource subdimension indicated differences depending on the duration of service in intensive care units (U: 989.50, p<0.05). The results also pointed out that the most frequently missed nursing care service (not always) was noted to prepare the food for self-nourishing patients (60.3%) and the least frequently missed nursing care service was found to follow up the input and the output of the patients (48,7%). It was also reported that the major cause of missed nursing care services was the lack of nursing staff in the unit (84.6%). Conclusion: In light of the study results, it was concluded that nurses working in intensive care units prioritized certain care interventions. In other words, they prioritized services they considered urgent or necessary and missed other care interventions. It was additionally found that the major causes of missed nursing care services were the lack of nursing staff and other employees and a sudden increase in the number of patients or the density of patients in intensive care units.
