One of the reasons given in calls for a ban on autonomous weapons systems is that they pose a threat to human dignity. Their opponents argue that autonomous weapons are inherently problematic and that death at the hands of “killer robots” is undignified for a human being, which is sufficient reason to ban their use. The author argues that autonomous weapon systems do not necessarily threaten human dignity in a fundamentally different way than many legal weapons do, that their problematic nature in terms of human dignity depends on how they are used, and that human empathy should be valued on the battlefield but not required at all costs. The text, however, does not aspire to provide a defense of autonomous weapons; rather, it seeks to show that some of the concerns over these weapons might be unfounded.
