Young girls are recurrent characters in Irène Némirovsky’s work, but what distinguishes Le Vin de solitude from L’Ennemie or Le Bal, for example, is that it “focuses on the process of learning”, to use Bakhtin’s words, and can thus be considered her only formative novel. In her dialogue with the model as it was configured in the 18th and 19th centuries, a model that she did not adopt passively, Némirovsky managed to shape a very personal autobiographical material and to define a grammar of the genre that is peculiar to her, of which we propose to highlight some of the fundamental aspects.
