Critical Synthesis Package: The Relational Coordination Survey
Abstract
Abstract This Critical Synthesis Package contains: (1) a Critical Analysis of the psychometric properties and the application to health science education of the Relational Coordination Survey, and (2) a copy of the Relational Coordination Survey instrument and survey analysis developed by Jody Gittell, PhD. The Relational Coordination Survey is a short instrument with seven items including four questions inquiring about the frequency, timeliness, accuracy, and problem solving components of communication. Three questions inquire about relationships (shared goals, shared knowledge, mutual respect). The response items are presented along a 5-point Likert scale. The survey provides a valuable tool to assess the communication and relationships of participants centered on a particular work process. It has been shown to associate favorably with improved quality metrics and is generalizable across a wide variety of settings that require interpersonal interaction around a common goal. It has been tested in a variety of sample populations and has potential to improve outcomes in the health care setting or beyond. It has the potential to improve work processes exhibiting task interdependences, uncertainty, and time constraints.
