Numerical simulation and experimental study on gas mixing in a gas chamber for sensor evaluation

Abstract −: A 3D transient incompressible gas flow with multi-components was investigated in the present study to understand the gas mixing in a rectangular cubic gas chamber. Computation Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation was carried out to predict the detailed flow and concentration fields in the chamber. Experiments were conducted to measure the concentration of carbon dioxide at some locations in the chamber. The concentration of carbon dioxide increases with time initially and then approaches to a constant value. As expected, higher flow velocity results in faster transport of carbon dioxide and shorter time for carbon dioxide to reach saturation in the chamber. Consistent trends of carbon dioxide concentration can be observed from simulation and experimental data, which confirms the reciprocal validation between simulations and experiments. The experiment data show good agreement with the simulation results, which also implies that the simulation model could be applicable for other dual-gas mixtures in predicting their mixing behaviours, especially for the cases in which it may be difficult to conduct the experiments of gas mixing with toxic and corrosive gases.
