PUNCTUATION MARKS IN PARCELED CONSTRUCTIONS
Abstract
In this article the use of parceled constructions in fictions of modern French-speaking writers is analyzed. The intentional punctuation synonymy is the foundation for the “parcellation” device of expressive syntax. The sign “full stop” is used instead of a colon in the parcellation of compound sentence parts, or instead of a comma in the parcellation of homogeneous parts of the sentence. This sign separates, allocates the components of one syntactic whole giving them big independence and appeal. Short structured sentences create a fast rhythm and tension when being read, and also promote the emergence of additional information about feelings, emotions of narrators and characters, help to create integral images of characters.
