Abstract

Read online

With the expansion of globalization, new media have become even more important. This article intends to investigate how much online content is being read by the people of Tehran and what factors may have influenced that amount. I used a multistage sampling method to make a sample of 5000 people. The data was gathered by surveying the citizens of Tehran who are 15 or older. Based on the findings, the people in the sample spend 20 minutes reading web sites, 8 minutes reading electronic files, 8 minutes reading emails and 13 minutes reading on social media in 24 hours. Therefore, on average the people Tehran read internet content for 49 minutes which is more than other sources of content. As for the influencing factors, men read more than women, singles read more than married people, educated people read more than less educated people, youth, students, and employees read more than other groups. The level of parents' education and socio-economic status also affected the amount of time they have spent reading internet content. People living in more developed regions of Tehran, have better access and therefore read more.
