One of the main functions of journalistic style is the influence function aimed at inducing the recipient to some actions or inaction. To achieve this function, various expressive means are used in journalism, they are the subjects of expressive syntax studies. The purpose of this article is to identify the features of using expressive syntax techniques in Udmurt journalism in comparison with Russian texts. The research material was taken from the newspapers “Udmurt Dunne” and “Komsomolskaya Pravda” for the 2000s. The main research methods used were the continuous sampling method, the comparative method, and the method of contextual analysis. A descriptive method was used to present the results of the study. On the basis of the conducted analysis it was revealed that an Udmurt journalistic text is characterised by the dominance of inversion technique, which is due to the intralinguistic features of the functioning of the language. Ellipsis, parenthesis, and polysyndeton are also common. Journalistic texts in Russian often contain such means of expression as ellipsis, parenthesis and parcellation. Undoubtedly, the study of certain aspects of expressive syntax is of great practical importance, primarily for the study of issues of intercultural communication, textbooks production for future journalists.
