Several studies have recently advanced our knowledge of the relations between Dionysos and the sea, often placed under the sign of the « winy sea » (oinos pontos) or of the « dionysiac sea ». Resting on these advances and the new comprehension of such documents as Exekias’ cup or the tomb of the Paestum diver, we here attempt a borderline way by advocating the idea that Dionysos is not really interested in the maritime element, which he literally wipes out by substituting his own universe. An idea ultimately nuanced by the consideration of Dionysos as purveyor of riches thanks to the sea.
