Born in Cologne, Germany, in 1929, Amitai Etzioni is one of the best known intellectuals in public life in the United States. A sociologist, he taught at Columbia University and in the Harvard Business School and worked in the White House for Jimmy Carter before inspiring Tony Blair in his “Third Way” project to deal with the market economy. He founded the first trend in “socio-economics” in the United State, then the North American communitarian movement. He is the author of 24 books, including classics on the theory of organizations, international relations and political science. His most recent work deals with the frontiers of privacy and the definition of “commons.” The interview reflects on his life then goes on to a discussion about his concept of “community,” living together and “privacy” and the role of intellectuals in a global world.
