JANURA, Tomáš. The Filling of Official Posts in Turňa County from 1711 to 1785. Historický časopis, 2022, 70, 4, pp. 739–768, Bratislava. The administrative structure of Turňa County reflected its position as the smallest self-governing unit within the Kingdom of Hungary. Although self-governing counties were usually divided into four or more districts, dependent on the size of the territory, Turňa County was divided into only two districts, upper and lower. It is also unusual that the position of fiscal was established as late as 1711. The post of general treasurer of Turňa County was also created very late, in 1730, as a result of the reinstatement of the Royal Governor`s Council. However, in the case of the deputy fiscal, the situation in Turňa County partially resembled those in the larger administrative units. It was established in 1776, while Liptov County established the post in 1763 and Spiš County in 1767. Thanks to the regulations imposed by Maria Theresa, Turňa County, like Liptov, Spiš and Zvolen Counties, established the post of auditor (exactor rationum) in 1775. However, another consequence of the legislation from 1775 was that the post of second deputy notary was not created in Turňa County, however within Liptov County, it was established in the same year. The small size of Turňa County also had an effect on the posts of assessors, deputy reeves (acting deputy reeves) and deputy notaries, which were considered to be stable positions in other counties, where they were routinely filled through elections. In Turňa County, some of the important posts were even cancelled for a short period of time. From 1744 to 1749, the posts of regular notary and deputy notary were not occupied. Thus, there was no notary service and their responsibilities were fulfilled by the acting deputy sheriffs. In the last third of the 18th century, the majority of counties absolutely could not do without the acting deputy sheriffs. However, in the 1770s Turňa County was the exception to the rule.
