On March 4, 1977, the city of Svishtov was stroked by a devastating earthquake that killed over 100 people. Property damage has been inflicted on numerous residential and public buildings, factories, facilities and infrastructure. A considerable part of the city is trapped under the ruins. The state is mobilizing its entire available resources to recover material losses and to normalize life in the city. The tragedy triggers a wave of solidarity among the population throughout the country, albeit with mobilization of socialist propaganda. The reasons that led to the demolition of the buildings were identified by the experts involved. Guilty and punished, however, none. Although Svishtov is res-urrected from the ashes of a new life, this natural calamity has a lasting and indelible imprint on society.
