Reflexiones necesarias sobre seguridad alimentaria en Cuba
Abstract
Cuba exhibits average indicators of apparent daily food consumption that exceed the daily nutritional recommendations. However, this consumption depends to a large extent on food imports, since policy efforts to reactivate the agricultural sector have not yet resulted in increases in domestic production. This situation has worsened in recent years, marked by the Covid-19 pandemic and the tightening of the U.S. blockade. As a result, there is evidence of a contraction in the availability of food as a result of decreases in domestic production and imports. This, together with other factors, makes access to food more difficult. Moreover, spending on food continues to be the most important part of household spending, limiting the possibilities for other equally important consumption. This article examines in greater depth the problems faced by Cuban families in achieving food security in the current context.
