Documentare identità di genere ambigue nelle montagne dell’Albania

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the narrative and documentary tools used by two filmmakers, Elvira Dones and Karin Michalski, to illustrate a special case of breaking gender stereotypes: the “sworn virgin” of the Kanún of Albania. The focus was set on the implications of two different strategies: comparing similar cases and contrasting structurally different cases. By applying, in a non-dogmatic way, Bill Nichols' model of theanalysis of enunciation in documentary films, this paper aims to exemplify the subliminal relations between the different narrative elements and to interpret them as strategies of recognition of otherness
