From demands for peace to participation in negotiations. Pacifist feminism
Abstract
The profusion of peace initiatives coming from an international feminist movement opposed to war and violence shows how women are capable of rising above opposing sides and uniting to demand negotiated solutions, despite being largely excluded from political decision-making. The symbolic link between women and peace, which continues to hold together despite being at odds with both past and recent historical developments, is constantly questioned. Moreover, the pacifist woman-violent man dichotomy has done little to foster a culture of peace. This paper includes brief case studies on South Africa, Northern Ireland, Somalia and Palestine-Israel. The current debate on women’s participation in peace processes has found a political tool for achieving the goal of female inclusion in Resolution 1325, approved by the United Nations Security Council in 2000.
