André Schwarz-Bart has never had an easy time writing. His first novels saw the light of day with difficulties. He stopped publishing his personal work after 1972, although he never stopped writing until the end of his life, in September 2006. But he destroyed his manuscripts as he went along, not without getting back to work, sometimes on the same project, sometimes on a similar one. This study aims to find the reasons, biographical and aesthetic, for his struggles with writing. It attempts to explain the incompletion but also the perpetual restarts of his last project, Kaddish, a play and a novel, of which we find thousands of traces: plans, episodes, dialogues, buried in his notebooks, and the annotated pages of his books.
