Investigation of enteric fever outbreak in an institutional settings
Abstract
Introduction: The study describes the outbreak investigation of the Enteric Fever in an institution set up Methods: A descriptive epidemiological study and detailed site survey was undertaken. Widal test was performed on all the subjects and blood culture was done on few selected recruits. Results: Sixty cases of typhoid fever occurred in the institution. All cases were in the age group 18 to 22 years. Of the cases, one had complication in the form of intestinal perforation. Two samples out of 17 samples detected Salmonella sp. Fly nuisance and unhygienic conditions were seen at various places. The common water supply was through Sintex plastic tank which was found full of fungus growth while from outside they appeared clean. Conclusion: The outbreak of typhoid was due to unhygienic water storage tanks. A high standard of hygiene and cleanliness to be ensured to prevent such outbreaks.
