Unlike other modes of cell death (autophagy, necroptosis, pyroptosis, cuproptosis, etc.), ferroptosis has unique morphological characteristics and plays an important role in a variety of diseases. In recent years, there has been great progress in the study of ferroptosis. Studies have found that ferroptosis is associated with acute lung injury (ALI), a condition with a high mortality rate and limited treatment options. This paper summarizes the mechanism of ferroptosis from the perspectives of iron metabolism, lipid metabolism, amino acid metabolism, and glutathione metabolism. It also discusses the research progress of ferroptosis in ALI in order to find new directions for the prevention and treatment of this condition. Keywords: ferroptosis, acute lung injury, ischemia, sepsis, targeted therapy
