The beginnings of archaeological interest in studying the modern era can be dated to the early 20th century. Initially, isolated initiatives and achievements were based on research of archaeologists (especially specialists in the Middle Ages), ethnographers, and even exceptionally historians. In 1980s the interest in learning about our history of modern times through archeology significantly strengthened so that it is quite common in the Czech Republic today. However, the “post-medieval” concept still prevails, i. e. an interest in the monitoring of medieval phenomena, traditional or cultural artifacts, or the medieval technologies is still preferred, and only in the new dimensions of time – in modern times. The issue of the new phenomena, e. g. industrial society and culture, or the study of present is in the Czech Republic still at the edge of archaeological interest.
