Periodontitis as a risk factor for chronic kidney disease and oral manifestations in hemodialysis patients
Abstract
Introduction: Chronic periodontal disease is characterized by an inmuno inflammatory process, of multifactorial origin, that affects the protective and insertion tissues of the teeth. It has been related to general alterations that can modify the host's defensive response. Among them patients undergoing hemodialysis therapy as a result of chronic kidney disease. The bibliographic review was carried out from September 2022 to February 2023. The PubMed, SciELO and Elsevier databases and the Google Scholar search engine were used. Objective: To deep in our knowledge about periodontitis as a risk factor for chronic kidney disease and oral manifestations in hemodialyzed patients. Development: Chronic immunoinflammatory periodontal disease aggravates the general health status of patients with different diseases, including chronic kidney disease, through several mechanisms. Periodontal Medicine is responsible for studying these relationships. Hemodialyzed patients have a systemic condition that predisposes them to the appearance of infectious diseases or the installation of local risk factors for dissimilar oral diseases, including periodontitis, which establishes a bidirectional relationship between the two. Conclusions: Periodontitis constitutes a modifiable risk factor for chronic kidney disease and, at the same time, one of the most frequent oral manifestations in patients undergoing hemodialysis.
