Highlights • MAFLD was associated with increased risk and severity of COVID-19. • 31% of COVID-19 patients had MAFLD. • COVID-19 promoted liver injury and progression of MAFLD, especially in the youth. • The mechanism of liver injury in patients with COVID-19 was multifactorial. •Early screen and active treatment of MAFLD is recommended for patients with COVID-19.
