School Management Model to Promote Learners 21st Century Skills

The purposes of this research were to 1) explore the factors of school management to promote learners 21st century skills, 2) examine the school management model to promote learners 21st century skills, and 3) confirm the appropriateness, possibility, accurate coverage and usefulness of school management model to promote learners 21st century skills. The sample consisted of the 63 prototype schools which currently manage teaching and learning to promote 21st century skills for learners. Krejcie & Morgan formula was used to determine the sample size. The informers were simply randomized ; 5 people from each school ; 1 school director and 4 academic heads from different departments, were selected. The instruments in this research were structured interview, open-ended questionnaire and the checklists. The statistic procedures used were descriptive statistics, Exploratory Factor Analysis, Principal Component Analysis and Confirmatory Factor Analysis. The results can be concluded as follows: 1) School management to promote 21st century skills for learners composed of 8 factors namely: teacher development ; management of technology for education ; academic planning ; curriculum management ; learning activities ; creating a learning atmosphere ; building connection among parents and local community and evaluation and supervision 2) The management model for school principals to promote 21st century skills for learners comprised of eight factors ; 1) teacher development which includes promoting knowledge and skills for 21st century learners, teaching integration, management inside school and professional learning community 2) Management of technology for education such as management of displaying students’ performance inside and outside classroom, providing students’ opportunity to technology, and creating organizational culture inside school. 3) Academic Planning ; it consists of SWOT Analysis, opportunity and threat of the school, setting committee or team responsible for developing learners 21st century skills and also determining the vision and mission. 4) Management of curriculum, for examples ; follow-up process and curriculum evaluation, defining of content structure to develop learners 21st century skills and preparing the curriculum, defining extra-curricular to develop learners 21st century skills. 5) Management of learning activities such as designing learning activities for thinking skills, problem-solving, communicating and challenging ability of learners, standard of teaching and learning, indicators and main learning outcomes, analysis of learners for design learning and teaching activities. 6) Creating learning environment ; it consists of managing activities to promote research knowledge skills, providing learning resource for hands-on activities, and developing learners 21st century skills, creating learning environment inside and outside classroom. 7) building connection among parents and local community ; creating an understanding with parents and communities on the direction of teaching and learning development, having the opening house activities for parents and communities involved in as well as students’ success in learning, building connection with communities, organization or educational public or private institutions. 8) Evaluation and supervision ; consisted of supervision in accordance with the aptitude and interest of teachers, building supervising atmosphere, setting the committee for determining evaluation, process evaluation and authentic assessment. 3) The experts agreed that a management model which promote 21st century skills in learners were practical, feasible, possible, have accurate coverage and useful in the future school.
