The aim of this paper is to present a mapping of the cities in Brazil which have Italian language teaching in public schools, but first take care of the official documents governing the role of foreign languages in basic education. Although we conducted a survey of the situation in each state of Brazil, we recognize that the data can not cover the entire territorial dimension of our country. Data analysis allows us to state, first, that institutions have only a partial knowledge of the reality of Italian teaching in public context; secondly, that it is a positive surprise that Italian teaching is present not only in public schools in the Southeast and in the South of Brazil, but also in other regions of the country
