Caudal regression syndrome with duplication of the inferior vena cava presenting with chronic constipation

Abstract

Caudal regression syndrome is an uncommon congenital disease that occurs when a portion of the vertebral column and spinal cord fails to grow properly. Although the exact reason has yet to be determined, the link to maternal diabetes is well recognized. This spinal anomaly can thus be reduced clinically to simple coccygeal agenesis with no deficit or even lumbosacral agenesis with sphincter problems, transit disorders, and different lower limb impairments. We report this case of a 13-year-old girl who was born to a diabetic mother and suffered from persistent constipation. On radiological exploration, she was discovered to have abnormalities compatible with caudal regression syndrome, we also noticed a duplication of the inferior vena cava, this association was never described in the literature.
