Systemic lupus erythematosus is a chronic autoimmune disease of unknown cause and has numerous clinical and multisystemic manifestations due to the production of autoantibodies against autoantigens and the formation of multiple immunocomplexes that mediate inflammatory responses when deposited in various organs and tissues. The etiology is not fully clarified; however, it is known that there is a variable production of autoantibodies that, together with genetic and environmental factors, may be involved in its pathogenesis. The clinical manifestations are very variable and can go from very slight forms to serious, with commitment for the life. Adequate and timely treatment has improved the quality of life and survival of patients. The drugs most commonly used are glucocorticoids, antimalarials and conventional immunosuppressants (modifier drugs of disease); biological therapies have recently been incorporated.
