Each Higher Education Institute (HEI) carries out different internal processes, many of them attached to the way in which its leaders exercise the management. Given the complexity of HEIs, it was decided to conduct an exploration to identify the new leadership styles required by the 21st century universities. To achieve this, the main positions regarding leadership styles, its characteristics as well the way in which power and authority were exercised by the leaders were detected. In turn, an analysis diagram was made, which allowed to us locate the analysis categories according the perception of the rectors and directors of HEI. Through the use of a qualitative methodology and the case study, surveys were conducted for rectors and directors of the main HEIs in the state of Jalisco and one in Mexico City. The results of the interviews provided a typology of the current leader regarding his role in educational management where the positions of these actors are concretized on the best way to lead an HEI. This research is the joint work between the University of Guadalajara and the Technological Institute José Mario Molina Pasquel y Henríquez Campus Zapopan, with the support of the directors and the coordination of both institutions.
