The present study is devoted to the analysis of acoustic quality of educational buildings. Three secondary schools were studied: children were asked to draw and write how they perceived and evaluated the acoustic environment of their school. A semiotic analysis of graphics made it possible to identify sounds as cognitive representations: they are represented by: (1) sources out of context, (2) sources as elements of a “context”, involving activities, time and locations, (3) cartographic representations and (4) sonic phenomenon as such, represented with dots, lines, and so on. This operational research on the design process leads to the conclusion that this process for educational buildings can be treated at different levels: a functional and an organizational level on the one hand and an acoustic level on the other.
