PRESERVAÇÃO DO PATRIMÔNIO CULTURAL COMO ESTRATÉGIA UTILIZADA PARA MANUTENÇÃO DO PODER POLÍTICO

Abstract

This paper aims to show some contradictions between speeches and practices manifested in the interventions at the Historical Center of São Luís, aiming principally to analyze those who have benefited from the protection of the historic cultural heritage of the old town. From the theoretic methodological point of view the research has an exploratory and descriptive feature permeated by interdisciplinary study. Institutional documents have been studied which are related to the Preservation Program starting from the identification and analyzes of facts. Thus, this studyhighlights that the preservationist practice resulted in new urban configurations and it functioned as a place privileged by profitable opportunities to politicai power, which ended by legitimizing and keeping the status quo of some individuais.
