Dialogue as a fusion of horizons in Gadamer’s hermeneutical understanding
Abstract
To understand for Gadamer is to agree on the thing (Sache). In this sense it is not possible to understand a human situation when there is an inability to dialogue. Dialogue is that form of language in which we enter, in which we create tissues of words and get tangled up because we get carried away by the thing (sache) or the hermeneutical situation. The thesis of this paper is the following: The dialogue in Gadamer is a means to reach the fusion of horizons and hermeneutical understanding. The conclusion is that hermeneutics can only be achieved and expanded when the interacting parties are willing to do so and if they recognize the importance of the other’s opinion as an act of reason, which is not an abdication of reason itself.
