From a dialectical perspective, this article seeks to grasp the socio-historical foundations of the central categories mobilized in the field of artificial intelligence: communication, command, control and information. The intention is to lay the conceptual foundations for a critical theory of algorithmic governance by showing how contemporary developments in artificial intelligence encourage the numerical to the detriment of the linguistic, i.e. by replacing language with (computer) code. At the socio-political level, this change is producing a new algorithmic form of social regulation, algorithmic governance, which is based on automating the production of knowledge.
