Writing literature review: Challenges facing beginner researchers in EFL classes of Biskra University, Algeria
Abstract
Abstract: This research work tends to explore and identify the problems that encounter beginning researchers of Biskra University in writing literature reviews for their research projects. Therefore, we conducted exploratory research in which we selected n=8 Master candidates whom we supervised at Biskra University and who took part voluntarily in an online questionnaire. Moreover, we conducted a descriptive analysis of n=8 Master dissertations to further validate the research results. The responses showed that the candidates encountered problems in synthesizing, analyzing, discussing, interpreting, and generating using the selected sources. The candidates focused on writing their reviewed literature by quoting, summarizing and sometimes paraphrasing previous research findings. In other words, they challenged critically reviewing existing literature to develop an argument. They further challenged to coordination of many sources and ideas in a logical argument. Furthermore, they demonstrated less understanding of the literature which should answer specific questions related to their research questions, assumptions, and hypotheses. Their written literature review did not critically review theories and methodological approaches. These common problems are related to a lack of practice and knowledge, time constraints, the less contact between the candidates and their supervisors. Thus, we suggested that both candidates and supervisors should collaborate to improve students’ negative experiences in writing literature reviews and to enhance motivation to write any piece of writing effectively and academically.
