The overall aim of the present study is to examine the labour market situation of the working age Roma population, primarily the income, mobility and motivation conditions in the Nagykanizsa district. Methodologically the study is based on two pillars. On the one hand, secondary sources, ie. the domestic and international literature and statistical data, and on the other hand, primary sources provided by a questionnaire survey of 102 Roma of working age living in the studied district, involving 102 people. The results of the research revealed the territorial aspects of the employment situation of the examined group. According to the so-called relative indicator and inactivity rate, the eastern and northeastern parts of the district are the most disadvantaged. The level of education and income of the respondents is very low, in the latter the high proportion of jobseekers and participants in public employment programmes plays a significant role. Income disadvantages greatly affect the respondents’ willingness and abilities to move. The results of the study may prove useful in the preparation of district-level employment and regional development concepts, as well as the integrated settlement development strategy of the district centre.
