A Comprehensive Review of The Effect of Various PET Fiber Percentages and Shapes on The Mechanical Properties of Concrete
Abstract
The growing world population has led to a shortage of building materials, and the production of consumer goods such as plastic bottles has devastated the environment. Previous researchers have tried to solve this problem by reusing these materials as fibers, known as "PET" fibers. Because PET fibers are lightweight, they have a lower structural weight compared to other fibers. A comprehensive review of these researches reveals that the addition of PET fibers to concrete results in a lower slump and to develop an optimal mix design for concretes with PET fibers, the optimal percentage of fibers must also be determined. The results showed that shorter fibers provide better compressive strength, while longer fibers provide better tensile and flexural strength of the concrete. An analysis of previous research showed that the rate of improvement in the tensile strength of concrete was higher than the flexural and compressive strength. However, the shape, length, aspect ratio, and tensile strength of the fibers have a crucial impact on the performance of PET-reinforced concrete. Furthermore, this paper provides valuable information for future research and offers insight into the use of PET fibers as a sustainable alternative to conventional building materials.
