La couverture des toits des châteaux savoyards aux xiiie et xive siècles : un patchwork de matériaux

Abstract

The accounts of castellenies and tolls of the county of Savoy and to a lesser extent those of the Dauphiné abound, for the 13th and 14th centuries, with a wealth of information relating to the repairs and renewal of the roofs of the castral buildings. They give with precision the periods and the causes (bad weather, dilapidation, fires) of the destruction as well as the implementation of the restorations, detailing the materials, their origin, the artisanal processes, the men, and the costs. However, they never offer precise, detailed and technical images of the various roofing elements. On the contrary, the archaeology of the built environment provides this information and often makes it possible to establish a typology of tiles, shingles and shingles and sometimes of their installation when they have remained in place. The two disciplines are therefore inescapably complementary, one providing the materials, their form and, through it, the techniques, the other the dates, causes, number, and human and financial means, to which are added the technical and professional terms used at the time.
