Geotourism and Sustainability: The Kızılcahamam – Çamlıdere Geopark Case
Abstract
Today, geotourism is one of the popular types of special interest tourism. On the other hand, poorly managed tourism can have some negative economic, environmental and socio-cultural impacts on destinations. Therefore, all types of tourism should be managed with a sustainable approach. The concept of sustainability, which had been first introduced in 1987, in the Report entitled “Our Common Future” as a fundamental of development, and has three dimensions of social, economic and environmental aspects. The purpose of this study is to evaluate sustainable tourism practices in Kızılcahamam - Çamlıdere Geopark. In this context, local stakeholders’ opinion on the importance of sustainable tourism in the management of the geopark area is determined. The qualitative method was used in this study. Data were collected through review of the related literature, observation and in-depth interviews. As a result of the study, physical and legal deficiencies in the protection and the management of the geopark area were identified. The lack of trained and qualified work force, sustainable financial resources, local participation, and education are the other major issues in terms of sustaining geotourismin Kızılcahamam - Çamlıdere Geopark. These deficiencies can be corrected under the UNESCO GGN (Global Geopark Network) criteria.
