The aim of this article is to analyze the representation of space in the novel Innocence (1872) by Visconde de Taunay and in the homonymous film work by Walter Lima from 1983, having as a link the proposition of transcreation, as well as conceptualized by Haroldo Campos (2019). The elaboration of space in a romantic regionalist novel is an unavoidable condition, allowing the plot to unfold and molding the characters' personality. We intend to clarify how Walter Lima's film narrative reproduces the Taunayan premise taking into account the “real double” of cinematographic language, punctuated by Jaques Amount (2012). With this, we propose to delineate how the space transcends its condition of scenery, blending a wild atmosphere, which is based on the characters' hostile actions and profile. Bearing in mind the representation of space as a narrative category, and this is the genre by which both productions elected as corpus of this article unfold, we chose Luis Alberto Brandão (2002), Osiris Borges Filho (2007), Jennifer Van Sijll (2017), in addition to Bordwell and Thompson (2013) as the main theoretical framework of our analytical path.
