Thyroid orbitopathy. A pathophysiologic enigma and a therapeutic dilemma
Abstract
Thyroid orbitopathy is an orbital inflammatory disease with an often autoimmune origin associated with metabolic disorders of the thyroid gland. Its clinical presentation is varied and it can cause significant disturbances of the vision and of the orbital architecture, resulting in a significant decrease in the quality of life of patients; often causes severe impairment of personality. It affects mostly women and it is negatively influenced by factors such as smoking, age, sex and race. Medical treatment should be early, aggressive and based on the stage of the patient in order to avoid grave consequences.
