Violencia y cuerpo agotado en la Segunda Parte de Don Quijote de la Mancha

Abstract

The present study dwells on the various forms of physical violence in the second part of the Don Quixote de la Mancha, in connection with the theme of bodily decay. Gratuitous cruelty seems to prevail, as the eponymous character suffers an accumulation of gratuitous blows without any moral meaning. The multiple traumas and the playful but nonetheless violent game of the Dulcinea del Toboso’s enchantment and disenchantment should be understood as variations on Don Quixote’s corporeal and suffering body. These observations at least partly explain the melancholy that permeates the end of the work.
