Decimal Fractions in Ottoman Mathematical Texts Written by Bookkeepers: (15th -17th Centuries)
Abstract
This work aims to reveal the contributions of the bookkeepers to Ottoman mathematics through an analysis of how decimal fractions were handled in the traditional period of Ottomans. Also, this study tries to offer some ndings related to the place of the Ottomans in the history of arithmetics. The texts that we have examined represent an advanced level of calculation techniques with decimal fractions peculiar to Ottoman bookkeepers. According to the results of our research, it is seen that decimal fractions were much used in the mathematical texts we examined, and the contributions to this area continued uninterruptedly between the 15th and 17th centuries. In this study, different manuscripts have been used and evaluated with the information we have obtained from other sources.
