The article presents the results of the ethnographic research carried out in Lomo de Corvina during its first months of its occupation. It also discusses the relation between social and political processes, defined by precariousness and distrust, and the building and transformation of material space. It offers the theory of Social Fields as an interpretation framework, concluding that urban space is only a secondary by-product of interactions in that field. Finally, we state that, at least in these cases, human settlements should not be considered as socio-territorial entities created to manage the self-urbanization process, but only as functional structures in the effort to gain legal property over individual plots.
