6 voices in 10 minutes: Psychosocial aspects and the elderly Institutionalized elderly patient Inherent aspects regarding hospitalization are particularly important for older adults. In urban societies, older people, people aged 65 years old and older, represent more than half of patients admitted to intensive care units (ICU). In this context, acute and chronic complications arising from diabetes increase risk for older people. Older people's admissions to ICU have been associated to the development of a later cognitive impairment, which may worsen depression's treatment in patients with diabetes.
